Breathing Exercises Used By Athletes To Increase Performance

Perhaps an unsung method of athletic performance enhancement, breathing training is being used today by athletes to increase their stamina and overall performance in endurance sports. Breathing training has been shown to increase lung capacity and boost stamina- helping to give an advantage over competitors.

Aside from some types of cardiovascular exercises, the majority of all exercises will work based on applying more resistance to a certain motion in order to build muscle. Breathing training uses the same idea by creating a resistance in the air that you breathe. It may be an odd feeling at worse, but once accustomed to the act of training your breathing you will notice the benefits almost immediately.

Hyperventilating can be a serious issue, and should be avoided at all costs. Devices on the market today will resist your breathing, but also feed your own exhaled breath back to your respiratory system so you don’t intake too much oxygen. This means you will have to breathe every so often without the device, or if the device permits, operate it to allow oxygen into the pathways.

Don’t let your breathing training stop after your daily breathing routines. When you go out to the gym or go jogging, it would be a great time to make sure you breathe in and out in deep breaths. Doing so will help improve lung capacity even when you aren’t training with a special device. Take careful note to not do so in rapid breaths, as you could easily take in too much oxygen and actually hyperventilate.

Long distance running, soccer, and sports such as swimming will require that athletes have an above par lung capacity. This is favorable because during the course of your actions, your body will start to show fatigue as your muscles demand more oxygen that comes in increasingly short supply. A deeper lung capacity helps by improving the amount of airflow that is transferred to your body in times when you need high sustainability.

Whether or not you need the assistance of a breathing trainer depends on your current situation. If you are already getting plenty of exercise, and follow breathing routines t promote lung health, then you may not need the extra help. If you don’t get in enough training, or want to do the training on the side for more of an edge, then you should start looking at retailers who stock the products to get a head start in strengthening your respiratory system.
